iSync and Nokia 5300
When I tried to synchronize Nokia 5300 and Mac OS X first time, I was unpleasantly surprised - iSync does not support this Nokia model. After researching I changed the file

And it works. But there is one bad issue — I had to change this file again after iSync 2.4 release.
Recently, I read about iSync plugins for Nokia 6300 and Nokia E65 (thanks go to authors who are sharing their knowledge) and decided to make one for Nokia 5300. My first experience with Xcode was successful and the plugin was released. Just download it, extract the file to ~/Library/PhonePlugins/ and finally restart iSync.

Awesome! I got it working (after lots of stupid mistakes) One thing to note: The modification to the MetaClasses.plist and installation of the plugin are mutually exclusive so make sure you only install the plugin.

I just got a 5300, and i’m having trouble following your instructions - could use a little handholding for the “not-an-actual-geek” set if someone could help me.
I’ve downloaded the file, and put it in the “phones” folder in “Library” under my user folder (i couldn’t find a “phone plugins” folder anywhere using spotlight… checked Library in the system folder too). I don’t understand how to extract it, and when i try double-clicking everything but the phone icon, it asks me what application to use - i have no idea.
Can anyone give me more basic directions on this?

When you have downloaded the file (nokia-5300phoneplugin.zip), you must unzip it. You will have Nokia5300.phoneplugin folder. You must create ~/Library/PhonePlugins/ folder if you do not have it yet (it’s a special folder for iSync). Move Nokia5300.phoneplugin to ~/Library/PhonePlugins/. Restart iSync.
If you are Administator at your Mac, you have another way — download the installer. Unzip it and run iSyncPluginNokia5300.pkg. Don’t forget restart iSync when installation was completed.

i couldn’t find a “phoneplugins” folder either. but installing the plugin is a lot easer than it first seems. just open a new folder in the library and call it “phoneplugins” and then drop the downloaded folder completely into the newly created folder. then close that window and restart isync. and voila…it works.

I must be an idiot. I have tried all of the above steps and couldn’t get it to work. I tried the installer and it said that it was successful, but after rebooting it didn’t work. I also tried to copy the plugin to newly created phoneplugins folder and rebooted and that didn’t work. I’d really like to get this to work. I just bought this mac and have never used one before. Please give me some help.

Alright I am an idiot. I was trying to sync it using the usb cable. Once I tried the bluetooth it worked beautifully. Thanks for the great plugin

I’ve run the installer and restarted, but when I open iSync it still doesn’t notice a device. I also don’t know how to use Bluetooth… so I guess I need more detailed help on what to do once I’ve installed and restarted iSync. Anything helps! I appreciate it, because I really like this phone, and if I can sync my iCal onto it, then I’m going to seriously consider getting rid of my Nano!

Ok, please someone HELP! I really want this sync to work, however I have no idea what I’m doing wrong. I’ve downloaded the file, added to a folder and when I open isync, it asks to add devices… I do that, it searches and finds my phone, and it says below it “this device is not supported by isync”

You put plugin to wrong folder or forgot unzip it. You can try download installer. Unzip it and run. When it finished, please, restart iSync.

iSync 3.0 isn’t working, gives the error that you need to re-load the plug in. I tried both the auto install and by hand. Anyone got iSync 3.0 under Leopard working?

Just a follow up; I can browse my Nokia 5300 via the Bluetooth Icon in the upper right hand off the top tool bar. Looks like I can transfer files also.

Okay, so I got all that. But is there a way to sync iTunes to the Nokia? What I saw in iSync was limited to a calendar and contacts.

You are right iSync just works with contacts and calendar. I don’t know is it possible to sync itunes and nokia 5300 :(. I send music files to phone using bluetooth and than update my music library on phone. Of course, it’s sad

You can try update your phone using “Phone updates” (Menu-Settings-Phone-Phone updates) or use Nokia PC Suite (works only with Windows OS)

Wow, thanks! This is a great little fix. Now I can stop complaining to T-Mobile about how the phone they gave me doesn’t support my computer platform! My satisfaction level with the Nokia 5300 just went up double-fold. Thanks for the useful plugin.

erka, I know your plugin only works with bluetooth, I’m trying to find out a way to make it work with the USB cable, in the MetaClasses.plist file i changed the com.apple.usb.vendorid-modelid to 0×0421/0×04b8 because 0×04b8 is the Product ID displayed in the Apple System Profiler when the phone is in Nokia mode with the USB cable connected. It didn’t work. Do you have any suggestions to make it work with the usb cable?

Synctunes (www.nesfield.co.uk/synctunes/) works brilliantly with OS 10.4, to sync your itunes with the Nokia but because there’s no USB driver for the phone for 10.5 so Leopard users are stuffed. If we can get a USB driver working life would be sweet and I wouldn’t have to buy an iPod, love the speaker facility on the 5300.

I know I’m not illiterate, but I cannot get this to work… I have manually added the code to no avail. Deleted the code and tried the installer. iSync said there was a problem with the plugin and I had to delete it. I tried manually adding the plugin, also to no avail. I have OS 10.5 and iSync 3. Am I just screwed?

This plugin works with oldest version of iSync (as I remember 2.4).
Please, read this article or just download this installer.
People may be interested in this correspondence from Nokia;
What it means is you will be able to transfer music and photos but I suspect it won’t fix the iSync problem.
(Tony I am running 10.5.2 and iSync 3 and it works for me)

I broke the screen on my 5300, and thought i lost my contacts for ever. I never took did this before because iSync didn’t work like it was supposed to out of the box. With this new functionality, i almost wish i could replace the screen and use the phone for good!!!

Hej you lucky 5300 users! I have the Nokia 3500 (classic) and I used the trick with the name changing on Tiger, but now on Leopard it wont work anymore, what do I have to different then on tiger or how is your installer working?
I tried the Metaclasses file further down in the BaseSync.phoneplugin folder you suggested and used instead of 5300 3500 (only a change of numbers, come on this should work!) and I also tried 3500c for classic. But Isync always tells me, that it doesn’t support this phone.
By the way I also tried the folder PhoneModelsSync.phoneplugin. Aint working either.
Any hints?
(this new Multimedia tool from Nokia is kind of nice. I would have never gone out looking for something like this on my own on their homepage)
